Soares dos Reis National Museum
Considered the oldest public art museum in Portugal, it was built in 1833 at the initiative of regent D. Pedro Duque de Bragança and located at the Palácio das Carrancas where illustrious characters from the history of Portugal lived, such as General Soult, Duke of Wellington, or Dom Pedro IV. In 1911 it was renamed as Museu Soares dos Reis in honor of the well-known sculptor. It is the most important museum in the city of Porto and you can not only observe the collections of sculpture and painting originated in the 19th century, but also rest in the beautiful gardens that surround this imposing palace. Museums
MaiaLand History and Ethnology Museum
Probably built in the 18th century. Simple and traditional design of two floors. Until 1902 it functioned as administrative headquarters – Paços do Concelho.
Later use was primary school; headquarters of Sport Clube do Castêlo da Maia; Parish Council of Santa Maria de Avioso; Post Office and Civil Registry.
With four distinct rooms, it has permanent exhibition about the occupancy of portuguese territory and other rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
